NS Hiking and Snowshoeing Summit Detailed Agenda, Jan. 28, 2012

Hike Nova Scotia’s Hiking & Snowshoeing Summit took placed on Saturday, January 28 at Keji Park. The aim was to create an inspiring summit and provide opportunities for networking and sharing. With 19 presenters and over 60 participants we were pleased with the interest and enthusiasm in the room.

Michael Haynes, keynote and author of Hiking Trails of Nova Scotia and other books, expressed the values of the “Why we hike” and shared some perspectives and recommendations for the future. The government panel representing four provincial agencies gave a broad perspective and echoed the importance of getting evidence that highlights the benefits of hiking. Other presentations included: how to mobilize community, school and youth around trail development; Kejimkujik hiking adventures and expansion; Stories from the Trail (fantastic snappy stories with lots of photos); and long distance hiking opportunities in the province. Two awards were presented to recognize significant contributions to Hike NS and hiking culture in the province. Michael Haynes received the Hike NS Honourary Life Membership Award and Deb Ryan, Hike NS President, received the Golden Boot Award.

After the Summit, there was a social at Mersey River Chalets. The next day, there were two hikes by the Annapolis County Recreation Services Winter Active Team. Special thanks go out the folks at Kejimkujik for being wonderful hosts. Of course there were the wonderful presenters and participants too!
